    Default Portage Canal Ice, Houghton

Woke up this morning to an email saying someone on snowmobile went through the ice between Chutes & Ladders and the Ramada last night. This morning looking out my window the portage is nothing but discolored slush surrounding the bridge and towards the Ramada crossing.

Given that this area of the canal never has safe ice plus the lack of truly cold temperatures, I'd recommend just staying on the groomed trail and leaving the thought of a winter swim for your hotel pool.

I somewhat hate to speculate, but as I drove home right now and stopped to look, there appears to be another ice rescue taking place not more than 100 feet from the bridge. Flashing lights on vehicles, people/rescue sleds off shore in the slush, ...

This year is not a good one for decent ice, temps not right, wet snows, etc etc.... Take the safe route. -Mezz

Been here in the Keweenaw for 9+ years between school and now work. How long I remain here is just a question of how long the "dream" lasts...

Only one Sled went through the ice, it was just east of the Bridge near shore on Hancock side in front of the Condos. Group of out of towners one went in and was able to get back out. The Sled is still down there.

It's visiting the fishies, and I'm glad I don't have to get it out.
