Default John, Good Luck in Rochester

John, It sounds like you and Nora will be on the road soon. Good "Luck" probably isn't the best we can offer, let's make it Good Medicine and the Best Doctors instead. Luck is for lotteries and card games, you need the best care anywhere and Mayo is just the ticket. You've got a lot of people pulling for you around here, keep us current, travel safely, and come back stronger than ever. All the best!

John, with a huge sigh of relief, I feel I must send a loud, "stentorian" cheer your way on the successful procedure. Hurrah!

With that 99.5% LAD blockage fixed, you should be feeling like a new man in a very short while.

To me, that 99.5% sounded perilously close to 100%, and I know something about 100%!

My LAD was completely occluded (100%) by the failure of my first (very early model) stent. Thus the cardiac arrest. Re-doing the LAD stent with a later model fixed that quite nicely, plus two or three more stents for good measure. Of course my medical team also did a great job of restarting the heart as well.
At least you didn't need a "jump start!

Happy all went well for you in Rochester. The Mayo Clinic is the second best in the country. Second only to the Cleveland Clinic.

Thank you for that saber1. All I can say to MP is, learn to read between the lines. No need to say more, just trying to be respectful. I might have been born in the dark, but it wasn't last night. -Mezz

Well, John was at the best overall hospital in the world. However, when you think of how many hospitals there are in the country, going to the hospital rated second in heart care is nothing to sneeze at. Folks in the U.P. are truly fortunate to have such a prestigious hospital within a days drive.

No worries guys. If one wants to shop for the cardiac care needed to fix extremely difficult heart issues by using internet search engines, they have that right. My choice was made by consulting with many doctors, some of witch were top notch cardiologists themselves. We were told that my first open heart was going such a challenge, that the unwavering answer was to go with the cardiac surgeon who was considered to be the best surgeon in the world for what I needed done. He was at Mayo. My first open heart surgery actually got bumped a day because the patient he was working on ahead of me was such a challenge that did not want to then work on me. That patient happened to be the top cardiac surgeon from Washington state and he had specifically chosen the same surgeon I had. The doctor that did my first also performed my second open heart surgery and has since retired from "active duty" is now a professor at the Mayo. We were also referred to the Mayo this time because they have the best team for what my issues were. We did mention Cleveland clinic to the cardiac surgeon at Aspirus Wausau that halted my procedure because once discovered the true nature of the situation. felt it was beyond his capabilities. His reply was that the Mayo would be best for me in this situation. Turns out he was right! We were told that very few surgeons in the world would have felt confident enough to put that stent into me.

With that said, over the past 18 years of my heart drama, both the Mayo and Cleveland clinic have been ranked at the very top of the list of medical centers for cardiac care and a person would be in great hands at either. MP is right that we in the Midwest are very lucky to have the two best cardiac centers in the world within driving distance. US News and World Report may choose Cleveland Clinic as their best and that is fine. Truth is, among the medical community, no one chooses a #1 overall. Each has their fantastic methods/staff for care. It just boils down to what your issues are.

    -John
